Does anyone have any pictures of a d4 pony tore down. I would like the ones of the back side of the engine showing the gears that mesh to start the big motor. Just trying to see what my options are. Thanks

OM,

There was a fellow that put a 10hp tecumseh on a 720jd. I work with small honda engines everyday and have access to enough parts to build a good one for free. So with a free engine Im free to maybe be able to rig one on for a pony motor. It will be a 13hp. I may not be able to make it work but I am kind of creative. I like the Idea of a pony motor and a honda would make an excellent choice. but the gearing on the back of the pony is my only concern.

Over the years every conceivable method of starting or replacing the pony has been applied. The large idler gear can be accessed and supported from the bell housing with pony motor gone and is available for various drives. The only variation I know to be a problem is running an electric starter motor through this gear/pinion train as the "bang" start tears up the pony clutch and drive mechanism and if you use the clutch the no-load rpm (4,000 rpm+) of say a spinning 40MT starter is just to fast. The closer you can match the parameters of the operating pony motor, the better off you will be.

I'm only vaguely familiar with the JD720 V-4 starting motor. It shares the same Zenith carb as the D2,D4 pony motors.

So OM am I reading your reply right that you think I will be able to use a honda for a pony. I dont want to use an electric starter up there in place of the pony. I think the honda will physically fit but I am studying on how to get those gears together. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by physically fit. Will it fit in place of the pony....I don't know. What I'm saying is it is possible to drive the idler gear with a different engine. I have seen such an application.....wasn't pretty...didn't pay that much attention to the particulars but I seem to recall a Briggs & Stratton mounted to the side on a sawmill application of the D315 engine with original pony removed.
