Machine is a mid 80's high lift. Return line from converter was ripped in half where the clamp holds it up to machine in the middle of the line, but was caught before fluid was empty. Replaced line, filled up transmission, half hour later of use now a steady drip from the torque converter. Could not using the thc cause the leak? Been using the trans/hydrualic oil. How difficult is removing the converter? How to tell where the leak is coming from once the converter is out? What is good source for work on the converter around st. louis if I can't fix the leak. Also should this machine have a belly pan? Currently does not. Thanks for the help

The torque converter is a sealed unit with only one opening and a small drain plug, there should be no oil in the bellhousing and the only way it can get there is if the drain plug came out of the torque, the seal has failed or the torque has a crack in it,the seal is the most likely,to check the plug you have to turn the engine till it lines up with the plug hole in the bellhousing,There were thousands upon thousands of the BW shuttle fitted to JCBs with the Perkins engine through the 80s so it would be no problem with the bellhousing, have a look at the link below, its a drawing of the shuttle and the torque without the bellhousing,it does not show where the seal fits but I have marked where it is whan both units are in place.

Sorry, I am blocked from viewing the link. If my memory servers me right, I don't remember seeing a plug in the bottom of the bell housing, i do remember it looks like a cobbled weld seam that was partially open where the oil was leaking from. I will get under tonight & take a picture & get more familiar. Thanks a lot for the help, i will post a picture tonight.

I don't think overfill was the problem. I first thought it was the engine rear main, but after continuing use & checking fluids, engine fluid did not drop, but tranny fluid got low. Machine has been refitted with a perkins & looks like a home made bell housing, thats were the fluid leak is coming from. Thanks

First off make sure that the shuttle is not overfilled, the oil is checked with the oil warm and the engine on low idle,if the level is not the problem it will be the seal between the shuttle and the torque, you will have to remove the shuttle to replace the seal, very straightforward job but messy, you need to remove the shuttle only leave the bellhousing.go to the link below there is a parts drawing of the shuttle and a source for spares, the seal you require is #77 on the third page.
