JD 450C won't shut off

A couple of years ago I couldn't get my JD 450C to start. Now I can't get it to shut down. I was working with it yesterday and suspected it was low on fuel. I stopped, put it in neutral and tried to throttle down. The throttle lever made no difference when moved and it remained at around 2000 RPM so I turn the key off. That may no difference and it kept running at the same speed so I turned the battery switch off. Still no defense. I started to get a little worried so I cut the wire to the injector pump. Still no difference and running at 2000 RPM. I felt like the thing was possessed. The only thing left was to cut the fuel supply so I disconnected the fuel line and let it shut down. So what could be wrong and what would the fix be? I know very little about diesels but I suspect maybe the injection pump solenoid is stuck. Could that be it? I did tap on the pump several times while it was running with the wire disconnected and it made no difference. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
RussT

Sounds like an air problem. When that injection pump gets air bubbles in it, nothing will work properly - including the throttle, governor, and shut-off.

If it was running perfectly, and the throttle was repsonding properly, then you could look more closely for a sticking metering valve and/or bad rubber insulators on the shut-off solenoid. But, if the throttle was not working properly - it has air in it.

Thanks for the replies. I could move the throttle lever all the way up and down and see the arm on the injector pump moving back and forth and it made no difference in RPM. The engine sounded exactly the same. So how would I take care of air bubble problems? Was it just because it was low on fuel and air got trapped?
Thanks for the help.

Air can get into it from any number of problems between the injection pump the fuel tank. If all is right and the air was introduced by a temporary problem, the injection pump will bleed itself. A clogged fuel outlet-valve at the bottom of the tank, a bad fuel pump on the side of the engine, a hole in a line somewhere - all can cause it. The fuel injection pump has its own fuel pump built into the back of it and it can draw some fuel on its own. But, if something is restricted anywhere inbetween the injection pump and fuel tank - it can draw in air. 450C ought to be easier than most to check since it uses the rectangular glass fuel filter. Just look at the filter with the engine running and see if the fuel is clear - or has air bubbles in it. In regard to the throttle and the fuel shut off - they both operate by moving the metering valve back and forth. If it sticks, it won't work right. If it's got air around it, it won't work right.

It is generally faster, easier, and safer to shut off the air on a runaway. Just make sure you use a board if it is supercharged.

It sure sounds like the solenoid. You probably will have another problem since you disconnected the fuel to shut it down. It will have sucked the fuel from the pump and lines, so you will have to bleed it before it will start again. If you cant shut an engine off (diesel) always safer to idle it down and stall it rather than disconnecting fuel lines
