My little crawler with a 2-71 Detroit Deisel has water dripping out of the blower drain hole. I have searced the archives on this and other forums but have had little luck finding a solution to this problem. It seems to be a fairly common problem with these motors. I just can't find where the leak is coming from. At first I thought it was coming from a bad head gasket or cracked head, so I pulled the head had it gone through and checked for cracks, installed new head gasket and buttoned it back up, filled radiator with water and its still leaking water out of the air box. I thought a bad copper injector tube was to blame, but it seams that the water is not leaking from the combustion chamber, but directly into the air box from somewhere around the push rod tubes. Anyone had this problem with any old detroit's. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Thanks for all the info. Here's what has happened. Found the crack in the block behind the #1 pushrod tubes. Motor can still be ran, but has some water blowing into the combustion chamber. I got motor up to operating temp, shut off engine, disconnected both radiator hoses and trickled a gallon of water mixed with this radiator stop leak (liquid glass) until leak stopped, let sit overnight, next day I buttoned everything back up and filled with water, ran machine for a while and it seamed to seal up the crack in the block. I'll use it for now and keep an eye out for another block in the future. My recollection we have not had any freezing weather for many years. Block is definitely cracked though.

Detroits with water coming out the airbox, normally caused from groudhop without coolant. The o-ring around wet sleeve engines hardens and flattens and water gets passed.
the only heads I have had water cracking problems with is the 4-53 series.

Let us know what the problem turns out to be. Curious.

JB,

That is a disease of those little engines ,
but the cause is usually hard water ( as in ice).

There are 2 air box covers , one is opposite
the blower and one on the back of the block,
remove them . Get a small mirror like a dental
mirror or smaller and a small bright light ,fill
it up with water and watch. If it is a very small
leak you may need to pressure the radiator with
4 or 5 pounds of air. I had one here about a month ago , poured the water in and it came out
the air box almost as fast.

ARE YOU SURE YOU GOT ALL THE WATER PASSAGE RINGS IN PLACE?

I have an Hd5g same problem .Did the same as you new head injectors and tubes, head gasket .My problem started as a miss changed injectors from hole to hole played with fuel ect. CRACKED block was the only answer I could come up with, coolant was flowing into cylinder under blower pressure and killing combustion. A different used engine changed the problem. Good Luck Mark Anderson
