I've heard the horror stories on the Deere 550's. Does this apply to the newer dozers (G and H series). I've got a chance to get a 550 G with low hours for decent money, but dont need another money pit.

still getting used to my 1991 G but am impressed with the power. Just bought new sprockets, track chain & bolts to put on next week. It worked fine up & down hill & on level but sideways on a hill it'd throw track off. The sides of track chain were worn pretty bad which made for a bevel. Then on hillside it would slide out from under the rollers no matter how tight track was.

As Roy said , they are totally different than the older 550's and 550B's .. Another thing to look at though is the blade pivot where it attaches to the push frame. The early 550G's had a spherical bushing and pin that would refuse to take grease after about 10 hours...That was changed to what looks sort of like an hour-glass shape pivot with a socket welded to the blade and a shim adjusted piece that attached the blade to the pivot area... Then that proved less than a long-life wear item and the newest design is a ball/socket design.. If it has the mid hour-glass shaped pivot that can be replaced with the same set-up for adequate life without too much bother... but if it has the older pin and bushing , then to convert over to a newer design is quite a bit of welding and fabrication.. a kit is available though..

Nope...The G series is as good as any other brand machine..The problem is in the early 550-555 machines with the British Twin Disc transmission....When the BTD tranny works correctly , It can't be beat..Problem is when manifolds and sealing rings go bad from wear and tear , they're VERY expensive to repair..Both in parts and labor...About the only things I've run into on the G series is early in production , they had a problem with steel tubes bursting for the clutchpacks causing a range to quit working..I've also run into a few machines that the pedal steer linkages froze up and caused the brake bands to wear out prematurely..A sharp operator would have picked up on this problem before the bands and drums got ruined..
