I saw a backhoe operator load a Case 580K backhoe onto the bed of a 3 ton flatbed truck. He used the loader and the backhoe to load without ramps. This was done on flat hard dirt!

Not operator skill. Just a impresive machine.

"The versatile cartopper self-mounts from the ground to an operational position in less than 10 minutes - it also dismounts without assistance."

It does that automatically. No driver input.third party imageYou still gotta be pretty brave to get on that thing and do that kinda work.

I saw the pics, but why would you need a backhoe on top? And getting down would be the real trick.

Go to ACMOC or ACME boards, I think Swishy animated a series of photos, you may find some more info on it there.

You must have seen the images and or video taken of a rubber tire backhoe climbing up into an open top rail car. I guess it's obvious that the machine is capable of doing so with an operator that has the experience and careful skill to do so without risk. I'm no stranger to these kinds of machines, having spent quite a bit of time in the seat over the years, sometimes using the hoe to level up, manuever around a bit etc., am very capable with one one of these actually, used to have jobsite superintendents request for me to be on their jobsites when I did this full time, but besides patting myself on the back here, and I'm sure I could do it, there is no way I'd even consider it, no way, no how, not me, not ever, doing what I've seen to climb into a railcar, bed of truck or trailer etc. Even the best operator can make a mistake, and maybe I'm missing something here, but it certainly looks like one wrong move and or not being careful with the controls, you are going over, it would be really interesting to hear from one of the guys that do this, to get their take on what it's like to do it, and like was said, you need some gigantis gonads to be in the seat of one of these maneuvering it up high onto a rail car, truck etc. !

I"ve seen that trick done several times over the years and it always amazes me. I also remember seening a series of pics online several years back of someone putting a backhoe on top of a rail car like one of the other posts mentioned. The car looked to be about 8 to 10 feet high so it made for a really impressive show. The one thing that always goes through my mind when I see something like this that impressive as it may be it"s just a major screwup waiting to happen....All it takes is one blown hydraulic line and it"s all over but the shouting.

It probably wasn't the safest way to load it but the operator probably has years of experience. It's amazing to watch what a good track hoe operator can do. Dave

The railroads used Case backhoes for years because of their ability to climb onto gondola cars to off load ties..Then they would slide from one car to another..You gotta have huge cuyones to do that..
