Just got a call from my daughter up at our camp in NH, and the main drive belt broke on the Babcat my son-in-law was using way off in the woods. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to replace this? (I'm wondering if I can walk them through it by telephone.) Thanks!

I'll have to check at home in my service manual, but I believe that the M-610 drive belt is changed like the drive belt on my M-500. If so, the drive belt is removed by removing the drive sheave (held by a retaining clip) and removing the connector (held by bolts and nuts) between the half shafts near the driven sheave- the belt would come out the split between the two half axle shafts. You could also hacksaw the belt apart if it is trashed. The tough deal was getting the new drivebelt to slip back over the drive sheave after placing on the driven sheave- to get the retaining clip on the drive sheave to lock you need to get the belt to stay away from the center of the drive sheave which was no easy task (the drive sheave bends outward further from the center which gives you more clearance to slide the sheave futher inward and exposing the retaning clip groove). I ended up using a small piece of flexible hydraulic hose to get the clearance. It's hard to explain what I mean unless you see it. There may be a trick or tool to do it, but if so I didn't know about it. Replacing the belt is doable in the field but would be a lot easier out of the woods as you may need to access the connector on the half axle shafts from underneath. Hopefully I haven't been mistaken about the M-610 being similar to the M-500.

That's really helpful. Sounds like the same set-up as in mine. I'm heading up north tomorrow to do it and now I know where the challenges might be. Thanks! Charlie

I just got a m600. The m500 is similar to 600 series. The 610 and 600 are very close to same. Only minor differences like carb variations, stronger upper booms and well, thats about it. In fact the service manual I got from bobcat is for 600 and 610 (thats how similar they are heh)

The manual says use a smooth metal pipe to aid in keeping the belt away (providing clearence to get to clip). I got to tighten mine, these belts last a few years and if left too loose they wear out faster. Also you can use the speed adjustment to loosen belt for easier replacement. Set speed to LOW or lever in all the way.

John

Thanks. Job is done. Never had to take off clip in rear. Belt is loose enough to get on with both pulleys apart. Problem was caused by my not greasing the driven sheave, so bushing wore out, side of sheave wobbled, and bingo. Made the repair a near nightmare. Glad I towed the machine back to the bard instead of getting into it out in the woods.

So, the belt is supposed to be really loose at low speed setting on drive pully? Im asking since you were in there already. We just got ours and Ive been reading that section in book (hence my suggestions earlier were in book). I have no first hand experience on this but Im about to (lucky me huh).

Can you be so kind as to advise me, having taken this apart yourself.

I have a drive belt issue, not sure where the problem is. I put the bobcat handles in any direction, forward reverse or steer and it sits there and just edges a smidge. As belt gets hotter, say 10 minutes of fighting with handles it moves alot more. But never quite gets to where I can spin it around. low speed doesnt move it AT ALL, only medium to high. High bogs the engine down however. Steers very slow and tires wont spin when digging in with bucket. I assume its not clutches since there are 4 and it seems all are effected. Does this sound like drive belt (or pulley) issue to you?

Looking at the driven pulley, it like most of this machine has not been greased. The zerk is dry as can be. Ill check for slop in the pulley. If there is any. Would you suggest new belt and new bushing. The belt in low speed setting has atleast 4" of play up and down. In low I CAN see the belt wobble a bit, but in higher speed settings it tightens and goes away. Sure sounds like your issue to me. Would like some advice since you have been through all this. Im about to call local bobcat dealer and order a bunch of stuff so if you can guide me a little on the drive issue Id really appreciate it.

So far I need
Intake and exhaust manifold gasket
Carb float (I rebuilt carb but that was mutilated)
Blew a front wrist cylinder seal
Drive belt
Entire ignition system fron coil to condensor to wires.

Shes been neglected service wise but not beaten if you get me. Has new paint and is in otherwise nice condition. Poor thing just needs someone to care and some TLC. Im not reselling this, Its gonna spend the rest of its days with me thats for sure.
