I am going to purchase a dozer to clear approx. 10 acres and to use around the farm.
Is there an all around better candidate, John Deere 450 or CAT D-3 or 4?
Give me the pros and cons of both. I am looking for a 10 - 15 year old dozer with good undercarriage. The work will be mostly light to medium with most stumps being rotten.
Thanks for your help.

Either one of the ones you mentioned would be good, the Cat though may have a better resale vale if you get the D4. As far as the attachments go, I would stay away from the root rippers that go on the front corner of the blade, I used to rebuild a lot of final drives when those things were put on. But those things do an amazing job though, just rough on the dozer. You'll at least want a PAT (Power Angle Tilt) to clear the trees and a rear mounted ripper to remove the roots. I had welded two hooks on the front blade of my TD6, and used that to hold up the tree for cutting. Good luck and happy dozing and watch out for those falling trees.

To get the advantage of the tractor one needs to get a collection of attactments. Brush rakes, fount end loaders, backhoe,6-w-blade,tree pusher, rippers, and a vine hoe. The last 4 attactments can make a little tractor do big work without breaking it. The vine hoe is a fork that is attacted to one corner of the blade and extents below the blade about 3 ft. It is used to pop out small trees and bushes the easy way.

The JD 450 is popular(parts will be easy) and can do a lot of work, but it won't hold a candle to cat D3 or D4. The JD 450 is bad to crack at the final drive housing. The D4 ussally comes with a nice big blade that is nice for road grading and moving lots of dirt. The D3 can come with the D4 motor, but is still a liter weight tractor which can be trailered with a good 1-ton. It's fast and precise with it's smaller 6-way blade. Tool it with rippers and it is the choice machine.
