Re: magneto info. in reply to Old Magnet, 07-28-2007 11:54:33
magneto has been taken out and reinstalled several times, if it is 180 out, do you remove
magneto and roll motor one half turn and reinstall magneto, is this the correct procedure
also there is only one wire coming off the magneto, there is no power going to the magneto
is this correct, there is 12 volt's at coil on top of starter, spark is very weak, and can't
get pony motor running, to check out main motor,
thanks for any information, and any checking procedure's or advice would be appreciated

That's a tough break....suspect you probably have a stuck valve.....that's about all that would do that unless something is seriously broke. Pull the cylinder head off the bad side and see what gives.
You can reuse the head gasket if it doesn't get tore up.

That's about the only surprise....otherwise it's a pretty straight forward job. Be sure to vent the air from the new installation when filling the cooling system. Did you look any further into the problem with the new one?

did not look any further into new pony, just removed bolts holding down pony, oil and antifreeze came running out, is the oil and antifreeze mixture
a surprise, just shook motor loose and started looking at how were gonna pick it, we have no
equipment handy,so we gotta try and figure that out, hopefully these motors are interchangeable
both are from d6 motors, so i hope so,will pull cover later
and let you know what i find, will call philly
today to express my concerns,we paid 10,000 for
motor plus about 2000 shipping to alaska, never
know if your making the right choice,we will see thanks for help dan-o

What I meant is the "flood" was a surprise to you.
Both the cooling system and the pony oil sump separate at the the bellhousing. All the D6 horizontal twin pony motors interchange. Same block but there may be variations in the bolt on goodies. I think I would have investigated the new pony further before pulling but understand you may want to work out warranty issues. It would be fairly easy to have a valve stick if the new clearances were tight, there was inadequate assembly lube and/or ample time and moisture to cause a problem plus inadequate shipping/storage precautions. Would be curious to see what you find.

Before you land the old pony, check stud sizes/holes in the bellhousing. It's not to uncommon to find oversize replacements if there was a thread problem.
