PLEASE HELP!! Husband bought a 6U D-4 Dozer. This dozer sat in a barn for about 5 years.Guy we bought it from said it ran 5 years ago when he pulled it in the barn, but now he can't get it to start. We bought it and we were going to try to get it running. We got the pony motor running but could not get the diesel to run. Finally after cleaning the filters out we got the diesel to run.He pushed some dirt with it and then parked it until the next day.He bought 4 new filters and put them in,and this started all our problems. It won't run now.He has bled everything many times, tore it apart and thinks the pump looks good. Can't get the pressure up to normal. It only stays in the caution area.Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I am assuming that thsi old girl had the sock (string) filters. did he drain allthe old fuel from the filter housing? cleaned and replaced the cover gaskets. I would have repaced the spring and plunger assy (Fuel bypass)instead of cracking the fuel lines open the bleeder behind each pump. You did drain the fuel tank and put in fresh fuel! go for the fuel bypass spring and plunger, replace both

Maybe you have some junk in the fuel tank.A while back I had quite a bit of trouble with my fuel line from the tank getting stopped up. I finally took the fuel tank off and steamed cleaned the inside. It was amazing the amount of stuff that came out. I haven't had any problems since then.

There are only three things that would effect pressure, assuming you have adequate flow to the pump. (One)The transfer pump relief valve & spring are malfunctioning (Two)The pump is worn out. (Three)The filters are clogged.
The filter housing is under pressure from the pump so fuel would leak out, not air in.

If the gage is reliable and all the above checks out it's time for a rebuilt pump.

Your right except after the thing sets and the pressure bleeds off then they will get air in and can lose the prime. Also if the pump where bad it wouldn't have run BEFORE they changed the filters. This is why I think there is an air leak if the fuel is flowing to the low pressure pump and volume seems sufficent from the pump. This is also why I suspect the seal is not in right somehow on the top of the filter housing,or it's not completely bled clear of air.

Diane, Your getting air in the system. So now start at the tank and see if the valve is on from changing the filters if it is, then take the line loose or off ahead of the filters see if sufficent flow if so then loosen the line after the low pressure pump and turn over with little engine see if fuel flows if so then just bleed it if any of these don't flow freely then that is most likely your problem. Also check the seals on the top of the lid to the filter housing make sure all of the old seal was out first and don't use that tube sealer for that job DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the cover you could warp it and leak air. Hope this helps let me know if you have more questions.

They did all this and still can't get the pressure up.Is their anything else that could cause this? What can we do? Thanks

Diane, I am guessing the fuel flows freely from the line and then the pump is moving enough fuel so now it has to be an air leak could be in one of the places taken apart or ,I still susspect the seals in the lid are either a square o-ring in twisted or cut chaffed or such Or a cracked housing or lid.NOw When you bleed it is the fuel flowing out of the filter or is it being pumped? Are there any air bubles in the flow or solid fuel? Then the injectors will need to be bled with the engine turning over and the throttle wide open to maximze fuel flow with full fuel tank. Just crack the bleeders on the injectors with engine turning over you should if its clearing it's self out you should see some white smoke on the exhaust with the injectors cracked and then as you close them go to running. I assume the housing was clean and free of dirt and such.

Had it running fine until putting in the new filters and then all the trouble started with the fuel pressure.Could not get it to run at all. Then in the process of trying to get the deisel engine running again, all of a sudden the pony motor will not start. Has no spark. Why could it of had spark one day and not the next?He cleaned the points, checked everything inside the mag and everything seems to be turning okay.Anyone know what it could be? Thanks!

Next on list would be check condenser for ground.
Then coil, secondary winding should read about 6200 ohms
Then mag drive gear for broken teeth.

Seems like this one is really giving you a hard time.

Thanks for the instructions. Got the mag fixed and put back on.It had a bad coil.Pony motor runs now. We have good spark, but still don't have any fuel pressure to get the diesel running.

That's the way it is with this 50 - 60 year old stuff. A lot of it's marginal and temperamental. Check for continuity across the points first. You have to lift the wire that attaches to the screw and housing in the upper left corner to do the check. Most likely it is just oxidized contacts.
