CAT 955H Generator Issues

I posted a couple of weeks ago and got some great advice. I've got a CAT 955H Traxcavator #60A-7963 (mid 1960's). The problem is that it won't start on its own, and has to be boosted by two vehicles.

I was finally able to get back up to the CAT and follow the advice of doing some preliminary testing although not as much as I would like to have done. I was not able to polorize the regulator as I cannot find it, and can't trace the wires anywhere.

So its a 24V system with (2) 12V batteries in series. The newest (upper) battery shows 11.80Vdc and the lower battery shows 12.38Vdc (measurements taken directly on battery posts with digital multimeter). This is without having been charged and not having been run in 2 weeks. The upper battery is a maintenance free CAT battery, but the lower showed hydrometer readings of 1.225/1.205; 1.240/1.235;1.230/1.240 (again not charged). I cleaned the battery posts and cable terminals extensively and recinched the cables to them, repairing some rub damage on the cable insulation as the neg cable passed through the lower battery box.I also cleaned the batteries with a baking soda solution.

On preheat the Vdc dropped to 6.99 and 8.99 respectively (the ammeter shows a discharge of 10). On Start the Vdc dropped to 8.64 and 7.97(the ammeter shows a discharge of 5).On start there is not enough juice to start it, and it only clicks.

So I see 3 wires that connect to the generator, although they are all painted over. I don't see a regulator anywhere. I wasn't able to start it (because I didnt have two cars to jumpstart with and its nowhere near power to charge the batteries) so I couldnt raise the bucket to bury my head in there.

Where is the regulator located? I couldnt find any sort of regulator box to try to polarize it. The dash board only has the guages in it (from having looked when the guages were replaced a while back). Where is it?

Even though the batteries had not been charged, and dont have enough juice to start the tractor without being boosted, what should I expect to see them reading Vdc?

Could the generator have an integral regulator inside it, which is why I cannot locate a seperate Regulator box?

Can I polorize by jumping the BAT and ARM wires on the generator itself?

Also there is no red reset button on or near the dash.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey there, you might want to check out your starter also.If it is taking 2 car"s to jump it off sounds to me like you might have a dragging starter.I have a Deere 450B that was hard to start, even in the summer I had to use starting fluid on it.I tried a lot of stuff including adjusting the timing, adjusting the injector pump, adjusting valves, put in fresh fuel, swapped out the injectors,2 new fresh batteries and even put new larger battery cables on it(the originals were smoking)when I noticed the cables smoking I knew I had enough amperage.I took down the starter and the brushes were almost gone and all the crud was drawing all the current and keeping it from spinning up good.I rebuild the starter and man that thing starts right up now, even in winter without starting fluid.I think now even if I put a lawn mower battery on it,it would start right up...lol Just something to think about.Good luck

We need the two cars because its 24Vdc and when we have enough juice, it starts within a couple of seconds. Fires right up. So I could be wrong, but I don't think it the starter.

You may be right though, I should probably service the starter sooner than later.

The voltage regulator is located under the same cover as the hydraulic filter, over the left hand side sprocket there is a guard with a hump on it,take the guard off and you will see the regulator, switch on the key and check to see if the cable going to the BAT terminal of the regulator is hot,it should be,try polarizing it and see if you got a charge showing on the ammeter when you start up,you should have removed the battries and charged them.
Good luck AJ

Because the CAT is nowhere near power, and the batteries are next to impossible to remove, I was going to try to jump it and let the batteries charge up a bit before I attempt to start. Then polorize it, then hook up the jumper cables again and fire her off and hope that she is now charging.

If not, then I can run her down to the garage and put the charger on the batteries, and start all over again.

I cannot locate the hump that your talking about. Inside the cab area, there is no hump. The Hydraulic tank is on the right side, adjacent to the seat. The left side has two battery compartments and the ram. I'm wondering if its in the center compartment/console that houses the start switch, throttle, and brake lock?

Go to the link below for a picture of the guard you need to remove, under it you will find the hydraulic filter,up and on the panel behind the filter is the regulator,to polarize the generator turn the key switch on and just momentarily cross the BAT and ARM terminals on the regulator.thats it the generator is now polarized.

Thanks for the picture. Where you have the hump, we have our second battery, although when I get back up to the CAT this weekend, I'll look around the area. We do have a large plate, probably 1/2" thick steel, that is below and forward of that area, to which the step mounts too. It's not removeable as I recall, but maybe the regulator is somewhere near it. I can't post a picture here, but I can email one.

OK you can't find the regulator, polarize the generator by tipping a hot wire to the A terminal on the generator for a split second, the wire colour should be brown going to the A terminal but more than likely been painted over several times, there has been some changes done to that machine if the battery is where the hydraulic filter should be,the top battery was originally under the arm rest and the bottom battery under the fuel tank on a 60A, where is the hydraulic filter moved to,the reg might have been moved too so look under the fuel tank on the left looking in from the back, that's where the original harness would have been.you can post a picture on Putfile.com like I do and put the link in the top box below and the name in the second.
