I have a friend who has a 544G that will not shift into 3rd and 4th. I checked the screen and filter for metal and found none. The torque convertor does not over heat. The oil is nice and clear with no burnt smell. Since this is an electric shift ZF trans. would a shift solenoid do this, when you shift past second it just stays in second. Any ideas would be helpful.

what jonathon said.also if you change the speed sensor make sure you put all the shims that were on the old one back on the new one.99 percent chance thats whats wrong with it.

If the speed sensor decides to give up it will revert to a "safe-mode" so to speak and not shift above 2nd speed...part number is AT184944... should be on the lower right side of the transmission case..check the wiring to it also.... maybe something yanked it off of the sender..
