Cat 3204 Engine removal

My Uncles Cat 3204 loader put its rod through the side of the block. after reading through the forum its seems #2 rod is common for taking a trip on the out side. Ive striped the front of the machine down but cant seem to figure out how to remove the motor from the trans. any tips would be appreciated.

What's it in? If it's a 931 or 931B like I have go to a repair shop that has Cat manuals and they can print you the complete engine removal procedure. Oh, did I mention that the engine and tranny have to come out as one unit because there is not enough room to get at the bolts to remove the engine from the tranny. You also need a floor jack to hold up the tranny as the entire tranny mounts have to come off so it has enough clearance to come out. Not just the big bolt but the actual angle pieces on the tranny. The suction hose for the hydraulic pump might be in the way to get the bolt out of the rubber tranny mount. I am very familiar with pulling an engine out of a 931B with a 3 forward and 1 reverse transmission. The 3 forward and 3 reverse trans is probably even more work. The manual says the engine and trans. are about 1600 lbs. All the hydraulic and tranny fluid needs to be drained. It's a big job but can be done by yourself. Especially if you have a shop to work in. I had to pull mine in the bush in the middle of winter. I bought a portable fabric type 10 X 20 garage, a kerosene reddy heater and a generator so I could stay warm. I could use these items anyway. I used an engine crane I also bought and my bobcat to pull it backwards and out. After getting my engine rebuilt and putting it back in, I had to pull it out again after 16.5 hours because the oil pump gear teeth were shaved off. The engine was covered by warrantee but not the removal or installation because I took it out. If I would have had them come out to do it it would have cost several thousand dollars! They said 931's are one of the worst. The engine had to come out a third time because the rings didn't seat. I told the shop I pulled it once for warrantee and they could pull this time. I gladly agreed to get it to them. It still ran so loading it wasn't a problem. A friend who works for a big trucking outfit got me a deal to haul it in and back. It was the best $300 I ever spent. One tip, when putting the engine back in leave the oil filter off as there is very little room for error and you'll end up denting the bottom of the filter trying to ease the engine and tranny back. BTDT. It's not a hard job but takes a while to do. Don't even attemp it without getting the manual or a copy of it. It misses a few minor details but overall is very instructional on what to do. I recall seeing a 931 on the side. I will call the local cat dealer. Thanks for the Tip. I might be off the hook since my uncle is looking at trading the loader he informed me today that he forgot to mention to me that there is no 2nd gear. I love a challenge. he built a pool house that turned out to be a bigger expense than he bargained for. so hes looking at trading the dozer and 5 grand to get the pool house bricked. Im not sure if its a deal but thats his call. Since i have the front end ripped off and the oil pan dropped Ill try and pull the motor and trans for fun. Im wondering if the oil pump failed and caused this problem. It was knocking for a day. I know i would have parked the machine and found the problem before blowing it up.

I must have lucked out. I was able to undo the Skid plate and then undo the bolts on the pan, screwed with it for a bit and then was able to slide it out. i will link to some photos after I take a few for you.

If it's a straight 931 maybe it's easier? My oil pan got a hole in it from a branch but in order to take the pan off, the engine has to come out. How did you get the oil pan off? On mine the big I-beam joining the track frames together is in the way. Dave
