Larry, I currently have an old 4500 that the swing cyl have been repacked several times. I used to have that equalizing hose between both cyl, but my swing cyl have gotten so bad that they leak internally so bad it blows hose off quick. I had to "bleed" off frequently to keep slack out of swing chains.
I still got the equalizing hose, but I plumbed a "T" in, ran a hose up to a low press. return spot & now the internal leakage just returns to reservoir without waste. I"ve done this same trick on a 550 & 555 I used to have.

The "chain swing thing" is 2 halves of chain connected to the ends of the swing cylinder chrome ends and connected to the swing post by means of a pin..Oil pressure is routed to the rod end of the swing cylinders to swing the backhoe from left to right..Leakage in cylinder packings will result in filling the Barrel ends of the cylinders with oil and transferring oil from one cylinder barrel to the other..Eventually , there will be too much oil in there to transfer from one to another..The "jumper hose" is a clamped on type that will either blow apart or push the hose off the hose barbs...Oh , those swing chains are real expensive..$ 600.00 a half , last time I bought them...

There's one of these machines for sale in the equipment trader around these parts for five grand. Apparently everything works except this chain swing thing. What exactly is that?

You need to repack a swing cylinder or two..

Sounds like one of the cylinders is "bypassing". In that case the fluid would have no where else to go.
