I have a cat 312 with a hydraulic problem and was wondering if anyone had an idea as to what it could be. When I was running it, all of a suddon the arm kept going out away from the machine, I tried to bring it in, but didn't help, then I pulled the safety lever up(supposed to shut down all functions of machine) which it didn't, still kept going out, so I turned off the machine, which obviously stopped it. Now the machine only starts when I have the hoses unhooked from the arm. Which really makes a mess but at least I can move the machine to where i ca work on it. Could it be the piston cylinder seals, but if so why would it casue the machine not to start, shouldn't the seals just leak all over? I have replaced the seals in other cylinders on this machne and they didn't cause the engine to bog down???? any help would be great. Also please e-mail me stephen@lavalleeconstruction.com thanks

ram ranch asked,..."Just bought a 92 Cat excavator was wondering if there are any good sites to find out informaction on them? "

I also read the cat forums at ACME and ACMOC. These are fun and informative. You can google caterpillar forums and come up with others as well.

As far as grey machines, i have heard of them but that is all i know about them....sl

Don"t know about any sites for information but if you need a service manual expect to pay in the neighborhood of $500 to get it from CAT. Believe me without it troubleshooting is next to impossible. Went to work on one behind another man that had spent over $500 in parts, plus labor on the hydraulic system to "fix a problem" with the pump controls. I got into the computer and got the only trouble code showing, which was for a bad engine speed senser. I replaced it and it solved the problem. That fixed the problem with the pump beause bad engine data going to the computer wasn"t letting it operate the pump correctly. In other words with the computer on these things a problem in one system may be caused by a problem in another system. Without knowing how to get in the computer and see what it"s being told and can tell you, your just pi$$ing into the wind trying to work on it. Also check to see if it"s a "gray market" machine. If so the seals on the ORFS fittings aren"t standard ORFS o-ring seals, their special and you"ll have to ge them from CAT. Otherwise based on the amount of work I"ve done on various ones for my customers I"d say their pretty good machines. If you run into any problems post them on here. Alot of the computer proceedures are long and drawn out but if it"s something I can look up for you I"ll be glad to. Good luck.

Like Bob said the serial number is what's gonna tell you everything you need to know. Call your local CAT dealer and give them that number. If the machine isn't over so many years old they ought to be able to give you a at least a partial history of the machine including where, when, and who bought it in the beginning. As far as the gray market machines I'm working on a 312 right now that somehow found it's way over here. That's how I know about the odd fittings. As far as how many of them made the trip here...The way I see it,, at least around here, it must have been at least a few since our local dealer has a "foreign" parts book for them, knows exactly where it is, and won't let it go for anything.
Good luck with your new machine.

Thanks everyone for all the information, I will have to really look it over good when it gets delivered next week. I don't recall seeing any thing foreign on the machine, as in warning stickers or identifcation plates.

Not likely is a Grey Market machine, Are the stickers in English or some other language? Serial# would tell.
Later Bob
