A servicing mistake-how to fix?

I've got a Massey Ferguson 274 Farm Tractor with the perkins diesel in it. While replacing the rear axle housing bolts i've told the boys (which includes the new dumb guy) to service the tractor with an oil change, air filter cleaning, greasing etc.). The new guy (former skidder operator) thinks it a good idea to fill the air intake canister to the top with 5w30 motor oil and no one knew what he did.
Today I went to start the tractor not knowing what was lurking in the air filter housing. I started the machine and she fired right up, then I got showered in hot black oil. I shut it down immediately and started yelling at the boys. lol!!

Question: Is there a chance something big has been damaged by this?
What should I do now?
Do I run it and burn the oil out?

Thanks for any help.

(the boss came over and ended up firing the new guy for not following instructions)

Wow, even on the old oil bath air cleaners you didn't fill them to the top, what was he thinking??

I am surprised that it did not run away, running off of the oil it was sucking in... I knew a guy that had a turbo seal go out in a Cummins, it ran til it broke, even after he used 3 big extinguishers on the intake. (It was a fuel hauler) He said every con rod, valve, etc was bent.. It wound up in litigation, as Cummins had worked on the turbo a few days before. Redline on the engine was about 2,000. IIRC, but they estimated that that engine had possibly hit 10,000 RPM's, running off of the oil..

No it wasn't in the exhaust. He filled the air intake to the very top with oil. Thanks for the advice...i'll be getting to her today and puttin' these suggestions to work.

He filled the whole cannister!! I thought it was just the bowl on the bottom, was that guy reared with his grandmother or what,or is name Homer DUH, he"ll never do it again, you best take it off and wash it,if you are in any doubt take out the injectors and then spin her over on the starter.
Good Luck

The fella isn't the sharpest tool in the shed obviously. Helluva nice guy just not too bright. He got fired anyways so on to the machine. I took the injectors off and the exhaust manifold just to be safe then cranked her over with a half dead battery so if there was any hydraulic locks or whatever the motor would stop turning before anything could break. It pumped out a bit of oil but I shut down the machine quick enough so the cylinders werent swamped. After cranking it over slowly a few times I put it back together and put the regular battery back in and she fired right up actually. Blew some smoke for all of three or four seconds and that was it. I let it idle until you couldnt smell oil in the exhaust anymore. However I'm sure the next few starts will be messy on account of the muffler being filled with oil and will be seeping back down into the manifold for a bit.

We degreased the motor and cleaned up the air filter canister. Got the rear fender and wheel back on and now she's back on track. This oil thing did cost an extra day though.

Not thinkin' gets pretty expensive pretty quick!!

If you take the air intake pipe off the engine, then bar it over by hand, you'll know if damage was done.If it will bar over completely, set it outside and watch it while its running. It will make a mess, but once it clears it will be fine.If it won't rollover, pull the injectors out and pump the oil out.Put them back in and try it.You got oil because the engine was getting so much of it it couldn't burn it all,so out the exhaust it came.

Your lucky the engine didn't run away.

He probably filled the bowl to the top so as long as it did not lock up it should be ok,put the oil to the mark and run the engine till it clears, that has happened thousands of times, never see any harm rather than the mess.

if it sucked a lot of oil in the engine, it could hydraulic lock, you may crack pistons, bend rods ect. you may wind up pulling the injectors, and rolling the motor over to get all the oil out. a little bit shouldnt hurt, but if ya drown it, you are gonna be in trouble.

You sure it wasn't in the exhaust ? I'd thought the intake full would of locked it up when it sucked it in.
