We have recently "acquired" a Caterpillar D4H dozer with an engine no. 3204. How does one determine the model year of these things? Is it based on the serial numbers? Also, we are going to need some help in determining a market value. Thanks for the help!

Serial number will identify the tractor, and correct reference manuals for it. By any chance is this a high track model with the Mitsubishi engine in it? Going from memory of some of the early D4 high tracks I operated years ago, I forget the corresponding letter for the series.

True market value should be based on the overall condition of the tractor, undercarriage components should be measured and the amount of wear on those same componets determined, providing the actual condition, expected hours left before replacement. Drivetrain, track frame and other major components should be inspected carefully.

Go to the rear of the machine stradel the drawbar and rais your LEFT arm streight in front of you. You should find the serieal number stamped in the frame. Something like 8PB or something.. I am a buyer if you can find the serial number and get me some photos..E-mail me direct for my phone number.
