Has anyone had or no much about a 1972 Koehring Skid Steer - [1300] Perkins 4 cyl Desiel ?

I am thinking of buying one and wanted to know if they are "generally" good machines?

I know that is REALLY a relative question but I dont' have any experience with them.

Can I get parts? Track record - etc .. please.

Thanks

Gary

Ya I googled that and I didnt find much. I would stay away, no run away! haha. If parts are hard to find machine is not going to be easy to fix and prob $$$$. Id stick with a well known brand for skid steer like one of the big 3. Bobcat, Case, and John deere. OUr bobcat isnt too bad in the parts price department. I still get parts from dealer for the m600 bobcat and the oldest one of them is what 40 years old! They were made for I think 10-15 years though. Thats just a example of how some are around for ever it seems and others go the way of the dodo for parts.

Thanks much .. for the info.

I couldn't find much either.

Strange you mention the 600 -- a guy south of me about 10 miles has a Bobcat 600 [gas] for sale for $4000. Only think is I can get the Koelring for $2800 -- and the guy started at $4000!

The BC 600 does have new tires and the bucket has been rebuilt too. (and a new ignition system -- distributor or something -- looks like a mag on it though. It is a 1979 -- any words of wisdom?

Now to add to my dilema on what to get -- an implement co. had an old Ford 600 [looks like a Jubilee style] with a loader on it for $1800 (and that is with a change-over kit to 12 volts!!]

Thanks again . Gary

Well value varies on area alot. Here those skid steers are worth some cash. We payed $3k for ours and it needs tires, we bought ignition and a slew of other parts. Right around $1k worth this week. So the dealer can get alot I tested that out unfortunatly. If its in good sound shape ready to use, its prob worth it. Again it does depend on the local prices. Buckets are what $500, the tires I checked are around $65 each. That is the cheapest I could get new anyways. Our igntions system was 3 parts. Wires are one (vary). Cap is another ($10). And the points, rotor, condensor and plugs are a kit ($50). Only way you can get the condensor unfortunatly is the ignition kit. Just got all that this week.

So as you can see the parts arent too bad on the small stuff. Bearings can always be little salty. Our main drive pulley and bearing was toast. That came to $400+ ($80 was bearing). The belt is around $90 new, so make sure its not cracked between cogs (sign the pulley is warped, cracked or misaligned). If the belt looks very old, those cracks are normal however. It should look like a nice THICK belt. THe belt is driven by sides, its doesnt rely ride in bottom of pulley groove so a norrow belt is as bad as a stretched one.

Make sure its steers well, left right, backwards and turns on a dime. If when in low speed it doesnt move, there is some wear on belt. If it veers to one side when pushing sticks forward its a bad clutch on that side. A good system will turn on its own axis and make the engine growl a little. Good sign there is no slipping.

Check all the cylinders are strong and pump is good.

BTW, these are distributer, atleast mine is. Its the gas one. VF4D wisconsin 25hp to be exact.

Hope that helps a litte. You will want a skid steer if you need alot of power in small spaces and tight turning radious. If not a front end loaeder may suite your needs fine. It depends on what you need. We have both. Some tasks require one or the other. Id decide which you need, then make a new post asking what to look for in a used skid steer so you get the most opinions.

They were never very popular so parts may be hard to find. I think they were made by another manufacturer and put the Koehring name on them. I remember seeing a pamphlet for some newer models and think they might have been made by Thomas but can't be sure. It was quite a few years ago. Dave
