How long are we supposed to warranty repairs done to a customers machine???? I was called to an old customers shop to check a steering problem..450-B crawler loader with ripper..I did steering clutches 9 1/2 years ago..It quit steering to the left last week..Took off the adjustment cover off and found the brake band lining laying loose in the housing..So , I quoted him a price to replace the brake band halves..... Warranty....Yeah , Right.....

90 days on my labor. Once done a steering clutch job on a 450B JD dozer guy came and got it after I got done, took it home backed it off lowboy and it sat there 2 years of course the clutches were stuck when he went to use it. Sorry buddy I'm not responsible for your lack of intelligence.

Well ya could ginve him he 5 and 50 deal , thats 5 min. or 50 feet what ever came first . When i had my shop open i gave 90 days on labor unless it was for any T/A unit that i installed and then that depened on the T/A unit itself as some had a two year and some had a 5 year in anycase it was backed by the rebuilder and i was not out nothing if one failed . As for parts that was up to who ever i bought the part from . Some people want a lifetime warranty . But on your customer i think he is way out of warranty. And i am sure that he will not like the NEW labor rates along with the new parts prices.

Also... any broken or worn part within 3 feet of the original repair area is also part of the warranty because "You guys just worked on that !!! "

9 1/2 years is a long time for a brake warranty. Did they perhaps attempt adjusting it without knowing the proper way? Actually they got pretty good service out of it. If it was 9 1/2 weeks or even months I'd consider it a possible warranty claim but not 9 1/2 years. That's totally rediculous. Dave

Didn"t you kow if you do a repair it automatically comes with a lifetime warranty. It doesn"t even matter if their third cousins, twice removed, friends, sisters one eyed, one armed, four fingered, boyfriend "repaired it" with nothing but a hammer, a pair of pliers, and a screwdriver since the last time you fixed it right 15 years ago. Seriously when your in business for yourself and work on alot of different types of equipment and do everything from engine and transmission rebuilds to machine work to line boring, it"s hard to have a warranty policy,in writing, to cover every situation. It all boils down to your reputation is your warranty so it"s hard sometimes when someone asks about a written warranty. The way Dad and I work all we"ll say is we stand behind our work and let it speak for itself. Had a customer recently trying to decide between the dealership (CAT), another independent, and us for an engine rebuild. He ask what kind of warranty we offered. The only answer I could give is if we opened up an engine and found we had done something wrong we"d cover it regardless of the time frame, but we had never had one come back in over 20 years in business. We got the job.
