The 8B8917 plunger is now a 9M4608, readily available at $23.62.
The spring number is still good, also readily available at $4.76. Per local Cat dealer.

Well, the old eye balls ain't what they used to be...the plunger number is an 8B8917. Sorry about that. I'm checking with local Cat parts to check availability. Know I bought one in at least the last year. Sometime the parts guys won't bother looking up the latest interchange number.
This plunger and spring was used in a lot of later applications.

Never did get it straight as to whether or not you checked the existing valve. Very common to have them load up with junk and allow pump pressure to circulate.

I kind of wondered about that number because my husband has an old CAT 7U parts book and the spring number was the same as the one you gave me but the plunger was 8B8917.

About the exising valve, I guess they had it out and cleaned it all up but they were not sure if the spring had enough tension. We don't have anything to check the pump. What exactly do you use to check if the pump is wore out?

You can use "plastigage" to check the side clearance and feeler gage to check gear teeth to housing clearance. I check my side clearances with micrometers. As mentioned earlier the clearances are pretty tight and those side dimensions are totals (for both sides)

Try Regal located in Florida, they are an aftermarket parts supplier for heavy equipment.

Thanks! I contacted Regal and they had the spring, but said the relief valve was discontinued. So, i'll have to keep looking for this part.
