I still have not fixed the problem of the burned points. I have changed the cap, rowta, plug wires, coil, battery and four sets of points. I have asked around and of the oldtimers said maybe you have break in the a wire that is grounding out letting full power get to the points etc. thus burning them out. I am open for and all suggestions. Joe n NH

Joe, where are you located? I am in Barnstead and have messed with these 40 and 420 crawlers for 35 years and maybe I can help you. As Lavoy said, is it a 12V conversion? If not, you sound like a bad condenser. Unfortunately, the new ones are not as good as the old ones were and often times an old one is a better bet. Burning points are caused by too much current flowing through caused by wrong coil in a 12 conversion of bad condensers. Really nothing else that will cause it. As far as wiring, the points are the last leg of the circuit to ground, so any bad wiring would only make it not run.

A 420 always has full power to the points, there is no resistor.
I forget whether you said you are converted to 12 volts, or still on 6 volts?
