I have a TD 14, series 142 gas over diesel. In recent cold weather the tractor has been idle and I notice there is diesel fuel accumulating in the crankcase oil. I have never noticed this situation in warm weather conditions. Is this a problem that may be controlled by utilizing the fuel shut off during in active periods???? I presume the leakage is due to a fuel pump seal at the drive???? Any ideas / recommendations appreciated.

Mike

Leave fuel turned off at the tank when it is parked in cold weather.

What are you seeing? Do you pull the dipstick and see a huge amount of fuel? Is the fuel mixed with the oil? Are you pulling the drainplug and seeing diesel? Are there any leaks? Check the oil resevoir in the fuel pump. Is this full of diesel? These pumps can lose a pump seal and let diesel into the pump resevoir, and then if your pump seal-to-crankcase is bad, you would have diesel in your crankcase, but this would happen more under load, unless your seals are really bad.

I have never noticed the problem during warm weather. I just noticed the other day that there is fuel in the oil and is evident on the dipstick as well as by smell and feel. When I last started, the oil pressure dropped at idle due to the dilution. In regards to the pump, I have noticed fuel accumulation in the pump oil reservoir and assume the pump scavenger valve is not working correctly allowing fuel to contaminate. This seems to be an inherent IH problem. I typically drain the fuel from the pump reservoir prior to operation.

Thanks,

Mike

I believe the scavenger valve can be taken out and cleaned/checked. I think the procedure is in the owner's manual. I had a similiar pump on a crawler, and when sitting overnight the pump oil resevoir would fill with diesel and start dripping on the ground from the vent tube. I finally sent the pump to a rebuilder, and he said it was something deep in the pump. You may have a combination of this or scavenger valve plus a bad seal in the front of the pump that lets fuel into the crankcase. If you keep the pump oil and engine oil changed pretty often, you might get by for limited use. You might want to get it fixed for extended use.

fuel in the engine oil in a cummins diesel usually was due to the o rings going bad on the fuel injector sleeves in the head. The design of your engine may be completly different and I may be barking up the wrong tree, but this is what came to mind first for me.
