The only weak link in the 5 and 6 rear end is the lack of adding oil to the full levels and not getting enough oil to the intermediate gear. They will go first and its uaually because of a leaking sprocket to cage bearing seal and the operator runs it low on oil over time.

The hd5 and hd6 use the same final drive, stering cluch, transmission and master cluch must hd6 use 1 more roller and the hd5 use a DETROIT 271 motor and the hd6 use A BUDA ALLIS 344 and these machine are very good if you have a good attention.

The HD6 supposedly uses the HD5 rear end and is over powered. I have had a couple of HD 5's and they have been great machines. They are also easy to work on compared to the old CATS.

I've got both, and there's not much difference in pushing power. The HD6 though, with the Buda 344, is quietier - and certainly not overpowered since it's geared so high. I wish it had a lower first gear. HD6 was tested with a maxium pull of 12,000 lbs and rated at 40 horse drawbar and 60 horse PTO. HD5 with the Detroit Diesel was rated almost the same at 38 horsepower at the drawbar and 58 horse at the PTO with a maximum pull of 10,000 lbs.
I love the Buda 344 engine as far as how it starts, runs, and sounds. But, engine parts are very expensive since the 344 is kind of a rarity. For that reason alone, I like the Detroit better.

Somebody like Hector Gemme probably knows a bit more than I do. But . . . from anything I've read or seen, the HD6 IS a HD5 - but repowered with a Buda four-stroke-cycle engine due to a legal disgreement and fight between Allis Chalmers and Detroit Diesel. I've swapped many parts between the two - but cannot tell your for sure what is, and what is not - interchangible. And of course, HD6s differ as they get newer.

In regard to finals being weak? I worked as a Case, AC, and a Deere mechanic - and I've heard that same story with all of them. I think they hold up fine when used and maintained properly.
