My Ford with a 201, 3 cylinder diesel has been getting more difficult to start until I couldn"t get it to start at all. I took the injection pump to the shop, and they told me that it needs a complete build (head and rotor worn out), but it's more expensive than I"m willing to pay on this money-pit tractor.

Does anyone know where I can get a good used injection pump or a rebuilt one?

Is your engine a Perkins badged Ford with a CAV rotary pump.

Most shops work on an exhange basis, and the exchange is based on the head & rotor being good in your old pump. If they know your's is bad, the price goes way up. What price were you given, and are your sure the head & rotor assembly is bad? When worn, the first symptom is usually bad starting when hot, but better starting when cold. I've seen many a tractor with a worn head & rotor, that the owner had to pour cold water on the pump to get it started when hot. What are your symptoms?

The diesel rebuild shop took it apart and inspected it. The rotor and head were worn and scored. The total if rebuilt is $1150 for sure and maybe upwards of $1300.

There's no way! I'll part the tractor out before I pay that much.

You still didn't specify what the symptoms were. Cold starting or hot starting problem? In regard to pump prices - if it's a CAV, usual price is around $550 for an exhange pump or $650 outright. If it's a Stanadyne, around $400 for exhange and $500 outright. The head & rotor alone can cost $175 to $300 depending on pump model and parts source.

There was a place online, I recall, that sold them. Don't have the link, but a google search should turn something up. However, when I researched it several years ago, the local rebuild shop was within $75 on the basic rebuild from the online site, so I went with the local guys. Ended up adding several hundred for a bent shaft they found after getting into it. Seems to me the basic rebuild was around $400 or $500.
