When I worked for Deere, we removed many and bypassed them since they were problematic. And, parts have always been expensive. But, have you tried tighening the clutch packs? I assume you've got the reverser with the two manually locking clutch packs?
My memory is a little foggy on the issue - but as I recall, the 420s and 430s had little all-gear reversers that were fragile and could not be shifted on the go. But, the 440s had a larger unit that used two clutch packs - and you can adjust them from the outside via the bung-plugs. We removed many simply because they were either run dry, or not adjusted and burnt up.

I rebuilt the reverser on my 440 icd several years ago as it was damaged when I bought the machine. The ears on the forward clutch were sheared off due to someone attemting to shift directions without the main clutch engaged. It sounds as if you may just need to adjust the clutch packs in the reverser thru the bung openings on each side of the reverser. Does the lever seem to "snap" into and out of forward/reverse positions. If that is not the case and the lever moves with relative ease the clutches can be tightened up in there engagement. Be sure that the reverser has sufficient atf fluid in it. (Hyguard I think is OK, but others can chime in with better info). I bought the clutch plates from John Deere, and they are not cheap. I wire my lever in the forward direction so it is not usable whenever anyone else uses that machine. I don't want to repair it again and it seems almost like a disaster waiting to happen to use it. I also repaired a boat transmission with the same type of clutches, except with hydraulic shift and it can be shifted without fear.
