I've always used the no-name brands from Autozone and such, and I've not really had any problems with them. At one point I was buying the more expensive oil in bulk because we had big dozers pushing trash that would break hoses on a regular basis. I'd buy that in amounts of several hundred gallons every few weeks, and I found it performed no differently than the no-name I currently use in all my skidsteers, loaders, dozers, excavators, etc. etc. The oil you could buy from Bobcat is probably the same oil I'm getting at autozone, but they say it is super-duper-bobcat oil so it costs 10x more.
So as to what type of oil you use my answer would be.... WET.

I thought I would give my $0.02 since no one had responded. I have a Model 500 (1960s) which I believe came just after the 444, and it can use either transmission fluid or hydraulic oil. The Bobcat dealer will tell you that they have special Bobcat brand fluids, but I believe you can use standard Dexron transmission fluid or universal tractor hydraulic fluid.

You should check to confirm first.
