Swing pins on Case model 32

Hi all,

I have rebuilt the swing cylinders on my Case model 32 backhoe and am now reassembling the stuff. An odd thing has happened, the rod-end pins were not too difficult to remove and one went back together without any problem. The other however was a b**tch to drive in and now after going through the main casting and rod end of the cylinder is now .030 to .060 out of alignment with the lower clamping ear. What is going on??? Did Case assemble this thing with the pin badly mis-aligned and force the whole assembly together?? There does not seem to be any other answer. Has anyone experienced this before? I am thinking of plumbing it up and tweaking the swing back and forth a couple of times to see if it loosens up the fit of the pin enough to get it to drift in place. And no, the pin is not bent. I am open to any ideas on this. Thanks.

Randy

I think I was not clear. I am not replacing the swing tower pivot pin, it is the rod end pin of one of the swing cylinders that is giving me grief. This should have been an easy one but for some reason the upper and lower bore don't seem to be in alignment. Came apart fairly easy and am stumped as to why this has happened. The bores should have been machined at the same time so I would not expect them to be very well aligned. Don't seem to be though.

The swing cylinder rod ends connect to the clamped pins in the base of the swing tower. If the swing tower is not vertical (worn bushings)the pins will not line up through the swing cylinder rod end bushings. You will have to jiggle the boom to align the swing tower so the swing pins will line up. No problem taking them apart.

I will trust you Old Magnet and give it a try. What bugs me is that the swing cylinder rod-end slides very freely on the pin, as installed, but the pin is still missing the bottom bore by .030 or more. The rod end does not seem to be pulling it out of alignment at all but maybe it is? I will power it up tomorrow and see what wiggles. You might be right. Thanks a bunch for the help.

Yes, I have a #32 hoe which I have rebuilt. Had a similar problem. As the swing tower bushings wear you lose the vertical alignment for the swing tower cylinder rod bushing alignment. To fix you need to replace the lower swing tower pivot bushing, pin and frame insert bearing..... ..or connect hoe and juggle down pressure on boom until you can get the pin to pass through. Also if you replace the lower swing tower pivot bolt, get the setup from a #33 unit. The #32 bolt shoulder is not long enough to take full advantage of the swing tower clevis.

There may be a bit of play in the swing tower pins, connect the hoses and press down with the boom or lift it,there is something not lined up as the pin was in there before you started and it came out easy, you could put a small lead on the pin to get it started,be careful of your fingers.
Good Luck
