Am in the middle of assembling the steering clutch on a John Deere 450B loader. I was told by parts guy I should add an additional steel plate(for a total of NINE steel plates)in the middle of the stack , two steels together. This would bring the stack even if slightly above the splines of the hub, and would allow the clutch to work better. Am not sure about this- any advice? Am using original drum and hub, reman pressure plate,(appears identical to original, casting #s etc.) replacement steels are .100"thick, fibers are .190". Was advised to add the extra steel and still set the clutch fingers at stock height around 2.060. Is this a good idea? Thanks

Thats an old trick to bring a worn set of clutches back into spec. as far as the pack height. It is not necessary if installing new plates and discs and I would not recommend it.

A 450B has 9 fibers and 8 steels and that is all you should put in it.
