Okay, so I recently ran a post asking about JD450B steering clutches. Long distance parts guy said put in an extra steel in the middle of the pack. Am Using original drum, hub, reman pressure plate, replacement steels .100", fibers .190" Guys responded saying put in the regular number of plates, don"t fool with it. Fine. Except now I"m looking at reman pressure plate, and though its identical to the old one , when they reconditioned it they milled at least .050" off the face to clean it up. A bit thinner than the one that was in the machine. So I"m thinking that with the shaved pres. plate on top of the new stack the assembled height is going to be a little shy. I"m pretty sure it will work ok, but maybe not as well or as long as it should- Any ideas? Its a fair amount of work to get change these, want to do it right. Thanks again.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it. I just figured that the parts guy knew something I didn't, so it was time to take a closer look at the parts and get some other opinions...

Install the correct number of discs, adjust it with the gauge, that is the way the factory designed the clutch to work. If you just arbitrarily add a disc, your finger height will be wrong anyhow, and will need to be set with the gauge.

when you sdjust your fingers with the gauge, you remove the difference in thickness, that .050" is adjusted out of the equasion. If the total thickness of all the disks is less than the minimum allowed, you need to replace the pack. adding an additional disk is only a temp fix for worn out disks.

First of all if you were to add a steel it would be on the bottom . Are you setting the finger heights with a JD264 gauge as per manual?? If not even a new pressure should be set as per manual. I sell new pressure plates made by the OEM manufacture and i bet not that much more then rebuilts. I also sell the JD264 gauge. email me for my web site.

Got to agree with Bob, add the extra plate. With the material removed from the pressure plate your technically adding only .050 extra to the stack height. As long as the clutch can disengage the extra will never hurt anything.

With that much off I would add the extra plate. I usualy add a used plate. Most of my Experience has been with Cat but the clutches are similar and I have rebuilt a few in the past 50 years
