JD 450 C The tilt cyl only works to the right. When I pull the control to the left it makes a noise like the cyl is as far as it will go but its all the way in. If I put the low side of the blade up on a stump and lower the blade while operating the tilt it will operate but it only goes to the right by its self. Thanks for any help

I checked to make sure I had fluid pressure on both lines. When I pushed the lever one way (forgot which direction) I noticed fluid came out one hose fine and also came out the other hose a little. What does that mean? Relief valve?

In looking at the various responses, I'm trying to understand whether the cylinder rod doesn't retract when it should, or it doesn't extend. The piston off the rod situation would cause it to fail to retract, but I thought you had the opposite problem.

If the piston is off the rod is it possible for it to work fine in one direction. What holds that together?

It works like a ram, displaces the rod volume. No matter what direction you move the lever the rod always goes out. Same thing for a piston coming off or a rod breaking.

Since the sound is like the relief opening (I think), the pressure is building either in the line to the cylinder or in the line back to the valve through which the other side of the cylinder is emptying. At some point in the valve, that return flow follows a different path from when you pressurize that side of the cylinder, since that fluid is valved back to the reservoir. This would be my best guess at the problem area. With respect to the piston seal itself inside the cylinder, I doubt it would work so well in one direction and not at all in the other. I don't know this machine or valving, but the valves might be pilot operated valves and the pilot mechanism may be screwing up instead of the valve itself.

Crack loose the fitting from the line/hose that drives the cylinder that way, and look for a good pressure squirt when actuated.

If oils squirts out real good, then suspect the cylinder.

If not, tighten that fitting and go back down that line/hose to the next fitting and loosen that. Actuate and look for high pressure squirt.

If it squirts good there, suspect a faulty hose. If not, and there are no more "test points" before the valve, start thing about the valve assembly.

Thanks for the reply. I've got fluid flow at the cyl. I'm just having a hard time picturing in my head whats wrong with the cyl since it works perfect one direction. Thanks

Maybe the piston came off the rod?
