Took the top of the trans off to see why the HLR shift linkage was so sloppy. The shift link between the arm that passes thru the trans case and the shift valve is worn, the holes the pins pass thru are now oblong. Is the right way to get at the lower clip remove the oil lines, the two accumulator bolts, the clutch valve roll pin (without dropping it in the case) and arm, then lift out the accum. housing? Would like to try to tighten up the linkage while the tank unit is off, either replace or somehow repair the link. Want to avoid dropping parts into the trans though. Thanks Geoff

I can't say as I've ever heard of the shift link wear out that badly...Yes you will have to remove the one lube line that crosses the upper [accumulator] housing..As far as the roll pin goes , I usually stuff a red rag under the area where the pin will be driven out to keep it from falling into the trans. case. Then the upper housing can be pulled upward to clear the clutch valve..There are 5 or 6 o-rings that seal the housings..

Thanks for responding. I'll give it a shot this weekend. Better now with the tank unit off than later with less access and not so skinny hack dozer mechanic...

For a long time, Deere Co. was giving away replacement HL-R linkage if worn, due to a class-action law-suit. It was a massive recall and I had to fix hundreds of them. But, that was during the late 80s, early 90s. John Deere was trying to find every 2010 and 450 crawler - up to the early Cs, that they ever built and update the HL-R linkage and shift valve. Maybe that's all done with now, maybe not? If your machine was already done, there be a neutral-groove sawed or grinded into the 4 speed range shift slot. If not, it may still qualify.

Jdemaris, you also mention the shift valve being updated-any way to tell between old and new? I am getting new shift link #T76033 and am now wondering if it is only to be used with the "updated" shift valve. Geoff

OK, so I went out tonight and took a look at the shift lever. It looks like someone lengthen the 2-3 slot by about 1/2 to 3/4", taking a piece out of the step before the 4th gear slot. The tank unit/shifter is off the machine so I cannot feel what gear(s)its in. I have located a new HLR shift link, and assuming I can install it, this will considerably tighten up the HLR linkage. One question though. I've only had this machine a year or so- In the future should I NOT rely on the HLR neutral lock? Instead find the manual range neutral-? (Assuming its had the recall) thanks for your help. Geoff

The original problem was the machine taking off while in neutral (in the HL-R). The 4 speed range-trans. had no neutral position on the quadrant. So, the recall included a new shift-valve with a wider neutral-slot, new linkage to replace any that was worn, sawing or grinding a spot for neutral in the 4 speed range quadrant, and putting a decal on it that showed a gear-neutral. The newer shift valve works with any linkage.

Thanks very much for all the info. I will replace the worn link, put the tank unit on and make sure that there is indeed a position for neutral on the shift slot- Thanks, Geoff
