Haul Truck 797 Cat, largest one they make. We loaded 450 tons on it when I was in the cab.

Grader, 24H Cat, largest one they make I'm told. 24 foot blade. Only 3 of this exact model around.

One of the few D10's there. It is used for road cleanup etc. It is about 10 years old with 40,000 hours on it. The pushing is all done with D11's, the largest model cat makes.

The D10 pulling our tour bus out. The bus is like a short school bus.

Retired dragline bucket.

The replacement, electric shovels. Looks small from far away, but its the size of a 5 storey office building.

View from the cab of the shovel, 80-90 tons or so per scoop!

Neat pix; the big things can get in your blood, altho the ones I drove in my mis-spent youth look like toys next to these (and WERE toys, next to these!). Where I worked (Santa Rita and Silver Bell) DW's-rubber-tired Cats-were used to keep the roads clear, as tracked stuff was just too slow. Usually a tracked Cat was kept at the shovel for loading clean-up (the shovel-runner always loaded until the muck ran off on both sides). As soon as a truck pulled out, the Cat would make a couple-three clean-up passes while the shovel loaded a truck on the other side. Those were good years.

I've always wanted to tour Syncrude. My welding teacher in high school worked building it. He said it took half an hour to walk from one end of the shop to the other. Syncrude apparently has the largest concentration of mining machines in the world. This would make sense as it's the single largest crude oil operation in the world. They also helped to design the O&K RH400 which is the largest hydraulic excavator with a 55 cubic yd. bucket. The 24H Cat grader is big but not compared to the Champion 100T that came out in 1975. The 24H is 500 HP. and 131,000 lbs. and the 100T is 700 HP. and 202,000 lbs. I think Syncrude runs the largest fleet of 797 haul trucks and has been shown on discovery channel. Nice pictures. Dave

Nice photos. You know you´re really stuck when it takes a D-10 to pull you out!

How did you swing the up close and personal tour of the place?

That's some serious equipment. Usually only see that on the Discovery channel. Must have been neat up close. Nice pix.
ps, think those guys will ever post a question on this forum: "...I've got a Cat 797 Haul Truck and it's just not pulling like it used to. Can only get 425 tons in it. Anybody have a similar problem with theirs?" :)

It was pretty neat, we have 2 good friends who have worked there 4 years on opposite shifts so one was able to drive us around while the other was running some machines.

I tell ya while in the haul truck it looks like you can just drive over the semi's. They had big pan scrapers there that I asked about and all they do is pickup rocks off the road when they are sanding it (too muddy when it rains) to prevent bruising the truck tires. There is a huge tire shortage right now for the haul trucks.

The haul roads are strange, we were in the bus and it is as wide as a six lane highway but only 2 haul trucks can fit side by side!
