There should be two filters - at least with most of them - one on top (return filter), and one you cannot see at very bottom under the oil (suction filter). The top filter is a "throw-way" element and is attached to the top-cover. You unbolt the cover and life off - and if you're luck - the filter comes with it. But, many fall off. There's supposes to be a long bolt - along with a bushing that goes inside the filter. The bushing is there so you can tighten the bolt enough to keep the filter from falling. Without it, the filter would crush. Most that I've worked on over the years, had the bushing lost, the bolt not tightened properly, and subsequently - all fell off. If you see the little filter-restriction valve jump up and down when you first start the machine - then the filter is probably still attached. The second filter, if you have one - is fine-mesh mesh metal and you can clean it and reuse it. It's helds in place by spring-clamps. You have to stick your hand down in the oil to get to it.
