Hello from the Midwest, this year work was slow where I am, down big time from a few years ago. Those firms that bid private work (my line of work) low ball the bid and then bill customer for actual cost (what every one else bid) got work , the rest were parked most of the year, bad year. What was your year like, business wise? Any suggestions on how to deal with the low ball (crooked ) contractors to get work when going against them?

I'm not in the trade but have friends who are, most are working 6 10's just to keep up with the work, oil patch is going great guns . Housing trade is a year behind in meeting the current need. Alot of workers a getting more in per=diem per day than the wages being paid in other area of the country.

I'm not in the construction business. My equipment taht I have (ain't much) is for my own personal use. Several of my friends do have construction companies (fairly small - no more then twenty pieces of heavy equipment and trucks) and they have all said the last couple of years to now has been pretty bad.

All private businesses in this neck of the woods are taking a hit. From the furniture guy to the corner store, everyone says it ain't lookin' good.

This from Northern Ontario, Canada.

Not too sure the reason for the turnaround. I know for us Canucks, our dollar is absolutely killing us at the moment.

Just have to keep on truckin' I s'pose.

If you're busy, do you have the time to read the forums? I actually took time off this year, 10 months. The first time in my life. No complaints. I know that the residential (new) construction has slowed cause the finiancial market bubble did in fact burst. Yes, those that went to commercial are working. I think that this is because the contracts were already let (before the bubble broke) and are just fulfilling the contract. Here in So. Cal. there is a rash of private commericial / industrial going up, which I am not a part of. These I suppose will finish up and that will be it for a while.
I have to tell you, I have been in the construction business 36 years. Now, (7 years) as an independent Inspector. I won't work with shoddy and unprofessional contractors. These types of contractors and consultants are short lived, they are having their reward now. The upright business people, those who have good work ethics and provide a good service, from the man who does a great job pushing a broom and the girl who answers the phone and to the owner of the project. These will stay. These will sleep at night as well.

Yesterday, I was filling for another project inspector at a new school in San Bernardino. I was checking the restroom fixtures for ADA compliance. I am appalled at the CRAP craftsmanship! I mean, what does it take to put the grab bars in at the correct height!?? And to make them level?? 6 urinals in a row, you think they culd get them at the same height!!!! (just a rant, I feel better now). My recourse is to write this up and submit this to the owner as requested and let the Architect decide if it stays, or not. Oh, 1 other thing, An adult / faculty toilet. The Toliet Paper despenser was located 36" away, and to the front of the toliet! hahahaha.

I feel that were going to a recession type period, (i am not a finiancial genius). My bills are almost non existant. I am debt free except for a truck payment (wifes), who in not employed. This is not a boast, I say this to encourage YOU to become this way. On MSN.com today there are some articles regarding how to start this process, they are about new car debt + pride.
I suppose that most of the younger get caught up in high debt, (like my two adult children).
Don't live above your means.....

Thank God every day that you open your eyes and put your feet on the floor....sl

out on the east coast where i am, its exactly the same situation. Everyone from residential construction went to commercial if they could, and everyone that couldn't has been bidding jobs and working literally for labor material and fuel, sometimes less. Its been pretty ruthless.

What has always worked for us, as a carpentry/gc company has been plain old honesty and good workmanship. We've never been a flashy company or really had any advertising. all our work comes by word of mouth, and that is actually fairly steady. Not nearly as steady as it was, but steady enough to stay afloat.
