I'm a homeowner who wants to upgrade from an old JD1050 (with loader & Bradco backhoe)to a bigger TLB. I recently rented a JD110, it's a nice machine, but a bit too small for all my chores. I think I want a JD310 or JD410. Any opinions? It seems that there a lot of 310D's for sale.

Deeres tend to sell for more than the competitors do. Frankly I think the 80s and 90s case 580s beat the pants off all the other machines of the time, and can usually be found for less. Also for about 20 years when the new 580s came out, the old 580s became 480s, and generally had twice the availability, thus you have a wide range of parts that will interchange.

When you check out the backhoe, use the loader then quickly wiggle the backhoe. This will test out the reverser on the hydraulics. Generally if the reverser is ok, then the rest of the machines internals should be alright. At least most of the expensive ones. If its slow to respond, thats not a good sign.

Just remember the bigger the tractor the more dangerous it is, and more respect it commands.
