I got cracks in my housing. Right in front, and above the place were the belly pan mount is. I'm welding her up. Grinded the cracks out, pre heated, runing a small 1/8 6011 hot.
How do I keep it from cracking?
Weld in one inch long beads, in differnt spots? Warm with torch more? Thanks Mike

Old Magnet has got it right the housing is steel and not cast iron.

both Certanium and MG make rods for what you are doing. My last bevel gear housing was for a 951, I had to put a 4x6 patch under the L Steering Clutch. For the crack I would drill a 3/16 hole at each end. grind the weld 1/4 inch deep, using a MG 600 rod (1/16) weld the full length
these rods are low heat. make a pass, go drink a cup of coffee, com stake the threads e back and chip and make another pass, do not get in a hurry. redrill the end holes tap to a 1/4 in and dip a set screw I loctite and run it in flush. Either stake the threads or a touch of weld.

The bevel gear case is a fabricated steel assembly, not cast.

Is this Re: welding cracks, bevel gear housing in reply to U9 U9 CAT, 10-04-2007 20:56:35
Is this cast iron? If so 6011 wont get it. If Cast iron use SS308L. Bronze arc rod will also get it. Is it off? Is it clean? If you preheat cool, heat soak in wood ash.

Drill the ends of the cracks as well- I find that helps to stop them speading as you are welding, then weld little and often, try not to get to much heat build up.

Yes I grinded across the ends ,I'll drill also, Weld then stop I haven't really figured out a way to cover up the welds, anything on preheating ? Thanks

first thing do away with the 6011 they have a digging action Go with a low hydrogen 7018 at least or if it is cast a real high nickel content
run the lo-hy on DC REVERSE

I agree. 6011 is a very poor choice for that application. 7018 or higher(ie/ 8018, 9018 etc.) or a special rod if it's cast iron. Cast steel use the "18" rods. Preheat would be a good thing. Doesn't have to be red hot just a little hot to the touch. Start the weld at the end of the cracks and weld toward each other. Grind past the crack on both ends about an inch and have the crater at the end of the weld in the middle. Cracks will start easier in a crater at the end than if the weld was started at the end. Make sure you have the right heat so there is proper fusion at the start of the weld. If you don't have a lot of experience hire a good welder. It will save you in the long run. Dave
