What would it take to competely overhaul the HLR transmission on my JD 450 (straight) dozer? Parts, labor, money?

These transmissions are very expensive to repair and once you get it all torn down, you should do it right if you want it to last anytime. As Roy stated, you need to pay close attention to the pump and clutch packs and manifold. There is a place that sells rebuilt manifolds for about $300 and completely rebuilt clutch packs(all 3)for $1600. They are called brokentractor.com in La. Dont even think about getting the parts from a jd dealer unless you absolutely have to. I have had one of these machines torn down for longer than I care to remember. I bought some parts and then just have never gotten around to finishing it. You should be able to get most of the parts you need from brokentractor(they sell new and used) and I know they will be cheaper than a dealer, but you could easily sink $3000 in this job. Let us know how you come out.

Yep that lever in theory disconnects the pump drive..I've seen about 2 that weren't rusted in the engaged position over the years...

Do I push the lever down or do I pull the lever up to disengage the pump. Engaged, the lever is roughly horizontal with the ground.

If the trans has good oil pressure and it won't back-up , I would check for the reverse clutch pack with stripped internal splines on the scintered [ bronze colored ] plates.. These plates have a tendency to wear the splines till they strip out completely..This occurs after many years of use....

Can I check the reverse clutch pack through the top of the tranny or do I have to pull the motor and tranny?

Wow , kinda like shooting fish in a barrel with no ammo...20 hours labor on a dozer...More on a loader..I couldn't tell you the parts damages without knowing what went wrong..front pump if scored , input shaft if splines are bad for clutch disk , manifold and sealing rings , all the bearing cups and cones, clutch disks if worn lining or internal splines worn thin , steel plates if worn or blued , ..Some stuff is available aftermarket...

What is the lever just in front and below the oil filter. It looks like it disengages the hydraulic input shaft from the crank pulley.

I bought this JD 450 dozer for $500 dollars and the motor starts right with minor smoke and runs smoothly. Hydraulics for the outside blade work great, no leaks. The transmission on the other hand will not go in reverse. I really havent driven the machine around nor pushed any dirt with it yet. A ways back I checked the pressure on the HLR tranny and was getting 150 psi in all three ranges with the pressure dropping a bit at the shift. The machine goes forward H & L no problem. I just took the blade off the front this morning and would like to get started on the repair. All the posts that talk about the 450"s slipping after they get warm kind of scares me. What exactly is the problem when that happens? Like i said before, I never got to drive this and get the tranny warm to notice any slipping. What should I look for when I get in the tranny?

My plan now is to replace:
1. Fix tranny...hopefully!
2. Master clutch (on engine) - bearing
3. Steering Clutch (both sides) - fiber or metallic (not sure) discs - pressure plate - bearing - bands

Does it attempt to move when shifted to reverse? If your pressures checked out okay and it makes no attempt to move or you don't hear any unusual noises, I would bet on the reverse countershaft being broken. If the forward end of this shaft breaks off, the gears will drop out of mesh and cause the same symptoms. (This is assuming that the H-L-R in the 450 is similar to the 2010) I had a very similar experience, and that is what I found. You'll still have to completely tear it down, but it may not be as expensive as a complete overhaul although you may want to do so while you're there.
