OT: Question about hydraulics in general

I want to build something that requires putting a hyd motor as an attachent on my skid steer. The flow on the machine could be up to 20 GPM and the main relief is set somewhere around 3000 psi. The motor will not be pulling any "load" so to speak, almost free wheeling. Does anyone have any info that could help me. What would happen if I used a motor rated at 15 GPM and 2200 psi? Would the motor blow up if stalled? I don't really understand what would happen if the motor was not capeable of the skid steers flow and psi.

First of all what is the flow output of the pump? Next only the pressure required to overcome the load will be in the system. Next your pump is not 100% effecient nor is your motor. You need to compensate for that. You did not say what speed the motor nees to turn. Do you need a low speed high torque motor or a high speed low torque motor? You may need to have a control valve that uses what is know as a motor spool. Your relief valve is there to prevent it from blowing up. What is the duty cycle? Remember running motors develop more heat than cylinders. You may need to add an oil cooler, a larger reservoir or both. Your turn for answers. J.

I'm not sure I can answer all your questions, but I'll try. The pump on the machine is rated at about 20 GPM. The motor will need to turn at a high speed, around 2000 rpm would great. I'm not very familier with the motor spool you spoke of. Please tell me more. By duty cycle what do you mean? How long it will stay loaded at a time? You are correct. It will cause more heat in the system and a cooler may be needed.

Would it be wise to have a 2200 psi relief valve on the input side of the motor, so the main system pressure of 3300 psi cannot reach it?
