I have a John Deere 555A Crawler Loader in nice shape. It's a 1988, 20,000lbs and 88Hp. Like most farm dozer's I used it to build a pond, built my sons road to his new house, dug his basement and cleaned fence rows as well as an overgrown pasture which had been left for 20 years to grow up in junk trees. It was not painless. I have spent a lot of money on injectors, final drives, new radiator etc. etc..
Will sell for 17K and it's worth every penny.

I have a 1988 Komatsu D41-S for sale. It has 3,979 orginal hours on it, runs like new, never had any problems at all with it. It has a 4-in-1 bucket. 3 speed, it's a 12 or 13 ton machine I forget. The undercarriage is about 40% remaining, I did have it measured about 500 hours ago and it was at 50% then. I've owned it for 10 or 11 years. I would like to have $20,000 for it.

How about a nice Cat 955 loader..I wouldn't go 951...Track pads are too narrow..Get buried too easily..

On any hydstat mechine you, want operate it for about an hour or so let it to ago operting tempture ,then see if will travel in a straight line . If the travel is only few feet before you, have touch steering peddles .This could be something simple as an adjusstment or wore swash plate or even wore out pumps or other high $$$$ parts . There is one other thing is how long has the mechine sit I,donot know about the later modles I,on the ones though the middle 90ds had some problems with not tracking straight if let sit along time and operated .

unfortunately if you want a cat 953, 20k isnt even in the ballpark for a beat one. I've seen ones that needed total undercarriage replacement before they'll run sell for 20. generally speaking i think youre closer to the price range of the 455 555 size loaders.

If you have limited knowledge of crawlers..especially Deere hydrostatic crawlers (655-755) then it would be money well spent if you could hook up with someone that does.. Also with any crawler, good knowledge of the undercarriage condition is essential. The repair/replacement of the undercarriage could, in some instances, be as much as the initial investment. Especially if hired out. If you could talk to someone at a local dealership and fish for info as far as the extent of their knowledge , then see if they would be interested in looking at it for/with you. (Just because they work at a dealership DOES NOT mean that they have any knowledge of an older machine like that ) As far as the Deeres.. look for leaks from the transmissions, check the splitter drive gear box for oil (dipstick is under the center floor). It doesnt hold much and they tend to leak out and go unnoticed.. Push into a pile and make sure the tracks slow but niether one stops moving as the engine rpm only pulls down slightly. Check for overheating transmission oil as its used a bit. Theres a thermostat type device that can malfunction and keep oil flow from going to the cooler. Straight tracking isnt as critical as with a dozer, but its should track relatively straight, forward and reverse. If you are serious about it, buy a set of ttransmission filters and cut open the old ones and look for any metal contamination. Measure/have measured the undercarriage wear. Check the radiator for any oil and check the oil for any coolant. If either are intermixed, its probably time for a rebuild. That can be done in-frame for the most part. Shoot some questions back if you look at them and find anything in particular..
