JD 440 Skidder trouble

First let me say how much I appreciate the good advice that I get on this forum. I am not a mechanic, but an operator with tools and lots of repair experience(out of necessity). So, on to todays problem. I have a John Deere 440B log skidder that I have gotten advice on in the past from the forum. Today I was idling along through some well spaced trees when I heard a second of clattering and then the engine stalled. This machine has the 8 speed powershift transmission with disconnect flywheel clutch. After checking the engine oil and rad level I tried to turn over the engine with the starter, no chance. I threw out the disconnect clutch and tried again. Engine started up and ran fine. I only ran it for a few seconds and then at an idle threw the clutch back in and the engine stalled instantly so I feel sure that the trouble is from the clutch back. I have some idea that the clutch could be the problem and I'll probably take off the cowling and clutch cover before anything else, but I wonder what other guys might think. I won't be back out until the morning as it is dark and grizzly bears are all over the place trying to fatten up on the last of the frozen berries. I don't want to be a supplement to their diet.

Well . . . just about anything is possible. But, I don't recall ever having a machine with a siezed Powershift. I rebuilt many - mostly in farm tractors - but again - I don't recall any that locked up like you describe. With the 440s and 440Bs, we sold very few with Powershifts - the SyncroRange was much more popular - and they had their own problems with engine clutches. Powershift was more common in the 540 skidders.

The clutch plate in your machine is spring dampened - and those plates sometimes fall apart and the springs can get stuck somewhere and cause a lock-up. But - that usually locks the engine, not the trans. You might see more if you pull the trans. top-cover off. Regardless of what the problem is - you probably already know it has to come all apart to fix.
