Before my dad passed away last Feb. He was semi retired and did light excavating with a JD 455G. We still have the tractor and will probably end up selling eventually but for now we use it around our property occasionally. My question is are there grease fittings on the undercarriage? It makes alot of noise when we track it from one point to the other. I remember the machines that I ran when I helped him on the farm such as the 450s, Bs & Cs had grease fittings.HJ

I appriciate the info. You guys are just as nice as the fellas at the JD tractor board. I'll be checking back from time to time. although I don't know how much longer we will have the tractor, Mom doesn't really want to sell it but we really can't justify it sitting around.HJ

IF YOU DECIDE TO SELL THE MACHINE, I MIGHT BE INTERESTED. WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

Jim,
I think if you look closely at the outside end of the rollers, you should see a small plug. Probably takes an allen wrench or 1/4" ratchet to remove. That is the oil fill hole if I remember correctly.
I have been told to be careful of overfilling them.

Hey Jim the older JD's had grease fittings on the top and bottom rollers and also on the front idler if no one has changed them it took a special fitting from JD to grease them, but on a G model tractor I'm not sure if they still use grease in the rollers or they are oil filled I would think it would be the latter and there would be no grease fittings on the undercarriage except to adjust track tension, unless you have oil filled rails its gonna be noisy.

Thanks for the response, I remember what kind of fitting you are talking about, flat with a slot for the grease gun to fit over. Our 440 and the first 450 had them. This tractor doesn't have that. Would the tracks be noisy because of non use, the tractor will sit for months at a time.HJ

Hey Jim yes its possible they could be noisy from non-use but it should go away fairly quick after you start to run it.
