What can any one tell me about the John Deere 555 loader

I'm looking to buy one and want to know what problems they may have

I've read on here some have tranny problems. Did they fix this or is this a problem on ALL year models

I was also told they have the same undercarge and such as the 450 is this true.

Right now the guy says the injector pump froze and busted but I'm more concerned with other issues such as transmission and steering after reading on here

I got to repair one right off the carryall brand new..It had broken clutchpack seals in it..We didn't even have a Tech Manual for it yet..That was my first experience with that British Twin Disc transmission..What a miserable job to do without a book..I hear some say , never had any problems , I'd buy another one right now....Go Ahead..I'm a little slow right now...And yes , you can install an HLR transmission from a 450..I've done a couple..You will need to find a donor machine to get all the stuff needed to do the changeover..The last 550 I rebuilt cost around $ 9,000.00 about 5 years ago..I just rebuilt an HLR in a 450-B dozer for $ 3,800.00 parts and labor..Big difference in my book..You do what ever you want..I just don't think the torgue converter machine is worth the difference in repair costs..Many people don't like the HLR because of speed-of-shift issues..It just takes an adjustment to make that HLR shift as it should. A well adjusted HLR can be run at wide open throttle without using the clutch pedal between HI-Lo-Reverse shifts.. The Hi to Reverse shift should just suck you out of the seat back..If your 450 slams into gears.....Get It Adjusted..If it shifts too slowly , get it adjusted..It's making heat from slippage...My 2 cents worth..Now I feel better, thanks..

I have a 1988 555A and it's great. Yes I have had problems but if it's a mechanical piece of equipment you'll have problems. Paid 11k used and use I do. Had it for years and would still buy another if I needed one. For 5k don't run. If the track pins and bushing aren't totally destoyed you could still put a lot of money in repairs and have a good machine at a decent price. They will do a lot of work.

I believe the 550 dozers and 555 loaders up to the G series had the Twin Disc Powershift transmission which is the one that is so expensive to build more often than not exceeding the worth of the machine. I have heard horror stories of up to $16k at a Deere dealer.

I dont know that they were a bad transmission more often than not they were neglected service wise and then the repair costs is what gave them a bad reputation, if you have one that is working right it's sweet.

But no way, no how would I give more than scrap price for a non-running 555.

I'm sure some other guys will be along shortly.

What is the difference between the jd 450 tranny (from what i understand is bullet proof) and the 550 or 555?

Roy is your discontent because they are expensive to rebuild or do you really think they are a pos from the factory

what would it be possible to put a 450 tranny in a 555 if one had problems?

Thanks guys for both replies I can buy this 1985 machine for $5500 is that a decent provided everything else is ok or is that still to big of a risk providing the history of this tranny

Don't walk away....RUN !!!!! !!It's not worth the agrevation...And , NO ...They haven't redesigned anything...Just because the engine quit , doesn't mean there isn't a transmission problem....Same bottom as 450-C
