How come most part numbers don't match?

A basic question i'm sure but nonetheless, one I dont know the answer too. I have a hard time even deciphering what my crawler is on account of serial number breaks, discontinued numbers etc. Even the dealer takes a "good guess" as to what parts I need for my machine. Needless to say the extra shipping charges really add to my parts bill.

For example, I am searching for a final drive for my crawler. The number stamped on the final drive housing is 976 033 LH. The number AJK helped me find is A50397. My book (I ordered from the dealer on a "I'm not too sure but this book might be for your machine" guess says it's part no. A50564.

I'm getting confused by all these gazillion numbers. I'm 99% sure that the source AJK gave me for my parts numbers is correct because i found a number from that source which correlates to a stamped number on my final drive drop cover.

Sure am glad i dont work at a parts counter!! lol!

Looking through the part # on the Case site there is no # like the one you are quoting 99% of the # have a prefix letter, the # on the housing may be casting #s and not part #s, doing a search for Case final drive turned this firm up.
Component Services Inc
Tel (877) 274 7278 or (317) 501 3766 they may be able to help you,you would be better getting a good used unit like you said than go to Case, there are a few sources for Case aftermarket parts, one link is below.
