1959 John Deere 440 ICD won't start. Engine ran fine one day, the next it wouldn't turn over. Replaced battery, rebuilt starter, no help. Connected battery to starter directly, bypassing cables, no help. Oil seems okay, no sludge. No oil and coolant mixing that I can see. Removed hydraulic pump, no help. Requesting assistance in diagnosing problem.

Does it turn over reasonable except for one pot? If so, possibly the head gasket leaking and hydraulically locking on that cylinder. Check to see if it is free, with a large spanner on the crank?

The engine would turn over one revolution after at least 12 attempts. I removed the valve cover and noticed a slight rust discoloration on one injector. I am not certain if it was condensation or possibly an indication of a head gasket issue. I guess my next step is to either remove the head or the injectors....I'm trying to decide which is the easiest. Thank you for your prompt response.
