Our Cat D3 was working fine when it was shut off. The next time it was started it had no right side clutch. The brake works and the left side works. Its 79u model with the dry clutches. I only use it if we need a small dozer or it the D5 is on another job. But it will need to be fixed sometime. Haven't had time to look at it yet so ideas on where to start would be appreciated.

Murray, check if any oil pressure is coming out of the steering valve on that side, you need over 200 psi to release the clutch. If pressure is good check that the bevel gear shaft bearings are good. Only saw that once, very rare.

A friend of mine was good enough to loan me his D3. It is a 79U model also. I have noticed at start up that it will turn on a dime in all directions with plenty of power. As the hydraulic fluid warms up I lose steering. Left reverse goes first. After a while, if I step on any steering pedal, it just stops moving. I had a feeling that it was a hydro problem. You have partially answered my question with the 200 p.s.i. The next question is this. Are there any filters or screens that I can check or is there something wearing out that I can't easily fix? I would really like to fix this for my buddy to show my appreciation for the loan. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade. I have a good understanding of hydraulics. I just need somebody to point me in the right direction. Thanks for any help.

OHIO Guy. There is a large screen to the RH side rear of trans under a big plate, maybe three bolts holding it on. Take it out and clean it for starters. But since you understand Hyd you know."Works good when cold and fades out as it warms up." Translates into a leak some place. The steering uses trans clutch pressure and that should be at least 300 PSI with warm oil at low idle. On Cat machinery and likely many other makes a fixed displacement system will hold 90% of the pressure at high idle as you throttle down to low idle. Check this in all gears, rev and for/1,2&3. If low in one gear it's a clutch piston seal if low in all, check pump and all seals.

Thanks Bob
I just spent the last two days digging it out of a big mud pit. I got it out now, and will start to look it over. I'm wondering if there is a pressure relief valve that is getting hot, or if the pump is starting to get too loose and bypassing at temperature. I hope I can fix this for him. I'll keep you posted. Checking the screen first.
