I bought this a few days ago.

Link

It's in pretty good shape but the seller didn't know much about it because he was selling it for someone else. There is no plate on it showing when it was made or by whom...through some searching I'm pretty sure it was made by Hough. It has a 4-cylinder diesel engine, no idea who made that.

I'm trying to decide whether to hang on to this or to get rid of it. Can it take a backhoe attachment? What I really need it to do is dig, because I'm building a house and need to dig out a daylight basement and septic. It gets stuck easy, I think I would need to change the tires. If it's not going to do what I want I'm going to clean it up and see if I can't sell it for a little profit and then pick up something that has tracks.

Any help would be great, I'd like to know the model and when it was made and what I can do with it. Thanks!

That is a H25, or H25B, can't tell for sure. The motor should be a waukesha 180, or a International. Made from 1962 aprox to 1974 I think. It is made to move and load, not real good digging or off of a hard surface. Good little unit for loading things up. Looks in good shape from listing. Try looking for serial # stamped on top of metal side plate (1/2" thick steel plate) beside seat, looking down by the side. Had veiwed the listing before on ebay. Good luck.

It's too small a machine to do the work your talking about...but for $1700.00 bucks you can't really go wrong...i doubt you'd be able to find a digging or tracked machine that works half decent in that price range tho.
Looks like it would be a fun snow pusher tho...lol...good luck.

Looks like a really old Frank G Hough H-25, from the early '50's or maybe even the late '40's. Not sure about the backhoe, but I doubt it for readily available backhoe attachemnts. Maybe post a serial #?

I would post a serial number if I could find it...I've looked over the whole machine and can't find any numbers. Where should I be looking?

Any idea what a machine like this is worth? It's in very good condition, runs well and everything works. I paid $1700 for it, trying to decide whether I ought to fix it up or let it go. It just needs some minor things and could be used, but like I said I really need a backhoe.

Looks like today's the day to look for serial #s...
My little locater book has Hough under IH-Hough; for H-25B sez "on left side plate next to seat" AND "stamped on top edge of side plate next to seat".
Other models vary (sorry, no dig cam/scanner) but favorite places seem to be "stamped on top of left frame rail near grille" or "stamped on left rear flange below radiator"
I think the following engines shown for Hough were diesel 4's (don't have my engine books): Wauk 180DLC (OHV?)and IH UD9. Another was IH UD281 (shown as 281.4, which could be misprint for 281 4cyl). Others were Herc DJX,DJXD,DJXH, which I THINK-repeat THINK-are 6's.
If it's a UD9, I just sent a parts book for U9/UD9 power unit to someone who has no real need of it.
With sympathy, Bud

Thanks for the sympathy Bud! I need it today.

This machine has been painted a couple times at least and I can't read anything that might have a number. There IS a plate right next to the seat, but it's so crudded up with paint I can't see a thing there. I'm going to take it off and try to get the paint off there. Will post a number when I find it (if I do); in the meantime any other info about this kind of machine would be great.

use strypeeze or some such paint remover to get the paint off, that way it won't bugger up the numbers on it. Good luck with that little machine, looks like a fun rig to push some snow or stone a driveway.

Post a pic to the Redpower site...you'll get all the advice you need.
I'd think you'll need a crawler loader for your work, unless loader has a ripper.
