John Deere powershift question

A couple of weeks ago the transmission in my 440B skidder locked up. Turns out the transmission oil pump had piled up. A pump has shown up and will be here in a week or so. Meantime I"d like to lift out the planetary pack and clean out the transmission case, look at the pump suction screen etc.. I have to take out the support shaft, the hollow housing that the clutch shafts run through and it is being stubborn. I know that I will have to separate the clutch housing if I can"t get the shaft out any other way but I"m doing all of this in the bush, at a landing road, and the less I have to take apart the better. If anyone has suggestions for pulling this shaft with the clutch housing in place I would love to know about them.

been years since I did a powershift in a 540B and never in a 440 but I'm thinking they are pretty similar. I want to say there are a couple holes in that tube and I've put short bolts in the holes and used a good slide hammer with a hook adapter (used for pulling bearing races) and alternating from side to side to slowly work out the tube.. I've always been able to do skidder transmissions without removing the transmission housing from the machine. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking of using a slide hammer, but this tube has no bolt holes in it. There is a earlier version that may. I think I just have to find some puller legs that will reach in to the back of the tube and catch the edges.
