I am thinking of purchasing a Caaterpillar 955, it has both steering levers and brake pedals, with a hand throttle, the seller said the machine was a 1970's model years. I think the machine is no later than the 1960's. Can anyone tell me if its later than the 1960's.

Thanks,
Fred

I think there were three models of the 955H,first had a flat hood late fifties, then there was one with a sloped hood both of those had dry backends and were lever steer, the last model was pedal steer and had a wet back end,if yours is a lever steer I would guess mid sixties, post the serial number that can be found on the left of the steering clutch housing on the left back corner of the machine, all them were two speed with a range box for high and low.

Don't think AJ would mind.....
My source shows 1963 production and yes it would be a wet back end and no, it's to early for pedal steer.

Thanks, This one appears to be a late 60's model.

My sometimes right source shows the 955H 60A series with pedal steer beginning with sr. # 8413 (1964)
By all means get it checked out throughly. These loaders usually get worked pretty hard, they all use the D330T engine which is somewhat famous for cracked heads and spun bearings.

If it has steering levers it is an early 955H, SN less than 60A5000. they were a good tractor in their day, probably made before 1964. My advice pay an indepedant Heavy Eequipmet mech a couple hundred buck to look it over and tell you what you are buying. It could be a 941 or 951 early edition, they came in in 1967 and had dry steering and steering levers. noe of the above 3 machine are in the class of the 955K/L loaders.

If it is a powershift transmission and a two speed it is from the 60's, but if it is a manual trans it is from the the fifties and probaly has a pony motor. If it has a three speed powershift it late sixties up into the 70's.

SteveGr:

Thanks for the reply. The machine doesn't have a manual transmission or pony. I don't know if its a two or three speed. It has a lever on the left that pulls back into forward or pushes over to pull back into reverse. With nothing to indicate if its 2 or 3 speeds. It has a 4 cylinder turbo engine.

Thanks,
Fred
