The brake pedal on my 450 was stuck down on my 450 for a while. Could the brakes cause the machine not to go in reverse? As a lot of you might know, I have a straight 450 crawler with HLR tranny that will not go in reverse.

I think you posted about this before? I answered but you may not have seen it. If your pressures are fine in all ranges, most likely the forward end of the reverse countershaft has broken off. If this occurs, it won"t grind, complain, or give any indication at all- reverse will simply go away. While not a common problem, I have seen several... The shaft isn"t that expensive but the H-L-R will have to come all the way apart to repair. Usually the shaft is the only item damaged.

The brakes being stuck down probably didn"t do it any good ..However the transmission probably had some issues to begin with..With the machine off , shift the HLR shifter and listen for a click when each gear is selected..If you can"t hear the click for reverse, it"s probably not going fully into reverse..Maybe worn linkage..I"ve filed the shift quadrant so the lever can go farther..That moves the shift spool so it can go into gear fully...Go to archives and look up 450 transmission pressure test..If the gauge shows low or no oil pressure and you hear the shift detent go into reverse..It"s HLR overhaul time..

The detent noise occurs in every range. I could hear three distinct 'clicks' when shifting the HLR handle. The pressure in all three ranges is showing 150psi with the needle dropping slightly between shifts and returning to 150psi once in detent. I even took the linkage apart on the left side of the rear housing and moved that with my hand to make sure the ranges were changing. Like I said my brake pedal is stuck down, machine goes forward no problem, no reverse at all, I could though pull the machine in reverse with my truck no problem.

Sounds like the reverse clutchpack is burned out. I"ve seen the large snapring that holds the clutchpack plates and disks together come out of the groove..Another thing that I"ve seen is the lands where the large snapring secures the clutchpack get broken out from someone being too rough with the gear puller most of us use to remove or install the clutchpack/shaft assembly.. Sealing rings at the rear of the HLR shaft could be bad , manifold that the sealing rings...But that would show a drop in pressure in reverse...Well , thats my best guess..Good Luck
