Just got a 1991 GMC TopKick dump truck for towing a home made pintle hitch trailer (came with 450B). The GMC has a 2" receiver. I can find 2" pintles for the receiver (at Northern) but they only have a max GVW rating of 16,000 #"s. I think the trailer and tractor weigh close to 19,000 #"s (very heavy 3 axle trailer).

The truck has a 1/4 plate welded to the hitch area (maybe 24" X 12") just above (and around) the 2" receiver. Will welding another 1/4" plate (would then be 1/2" total thickness) be strong enough to safely tow the loaded trailer? Plan to add a 4 bolt 10 ton pintle hitch.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Don"t need to loose a trailer and have to explain that to a trooper.

Thanks,
charliet

Appreciate the replies! Decided to add an extra 1/4 inch due to the actual size being 15" X 33". With the hitch bolted on (and your help), I think it should be OK.

Great site!!!

Just a heads up when welding plates together...cut holes or slots in one plate to give extra area where you can weld them together, instead of just on the edges.
